Jenny: “Malcolm, thank you very much for doing this interview for MalcolmMcDowell.US – how have you been?”

Malcolm: “Very well, thank you. I’ve come off quite a busy period. This year I’ve done 4 films”... “I had a nice time after I saw you during Halloween II. I went off to work with Denzel Washington, which was great. He was wonderful. [The film] is called The Book of Eli. I then went straight from there up to Oregon to play a little part in this golf film called Golf in the Kingdom, which is a very famous book by Michael Murphy. It was fun for me to do, because I love golf, and I know Michael Murphy. I met him way back in the ‘70s.”

Jenny: “Now that you’ve worked on The Book of Eli, tell me as much as you can about this movie.”

Malcolm: “It’s a post-apocalyptic film, [about] 30 years after the destruction of the planet. The Hughes Brothers are directing it, who I like very, very much, [and the film has] a great producer, who was Clint Eastwood’s producer for many years, called David Valdes. I really liked him and hope to work with him again. He’s a great guy” … “It’s the confrontation at the end [of the film] that I’m involved with.”…“I’m a curator of a museum, which has in it things like surf boards and things that are quite normal to us now in present day. They’ve got certain books, they’ve got nearly a complete Britannica, some complete Shakespeare, but they don’t have a bible, a King James version, and that’s what Denzel’s character, ‘Eli,’ can deliver”…“It’s a very interesting script. Gary Oldman – there’s a wonderful part for Gary. And there are some great English actors in it - an old friend of mine, Michael Gambon and Frances de la Tour, who won a Tony for History Boys. It’s a wonderful cast, and it was great to be working with The Hughes Brothers - who are fabulous!”

Jenny: “That sounds awesome! Now, what about Golf in the Kingdom – tell me all about that. What’s the plot, who is your character, how does he fit into the storyline?”

Malcolm: “It’s a book that came out in the ‘70s that was very hip”…“It’s not really about golf”…“There’s a very famous book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and it’s sort of like a companion piece to it. It’s really about one’s state of mind and the philosophy of life rather than the game of golf, per se. It’s not a sport film. It’s more a film of ideas and the philosophy of life. About a 3rd into the film there’s this big dinner party which I’m a part of. [At the dinner party] we all get to [express] our reasons for loving or hating the game of golf. The guy playing the main role is a wonderful Scottish actor named David O'Hara – lovely guy and a very, very good actor. And then there was Joanne Whalley, who is a fabulous actress, and Julian Sands, who I’m very fond of. And Frances Fisher too. It’s a very good cast”…“Every golfer knows this book. It’s one of those famous books that sort of has golf as a backdrop”…“It’s not a sports story, it’s much more spiritual, if you like”…“It was a very good script and a beautiful story”… “And all the cast were really top notch. For a week we [the cast] just laughed, and laughed, and laughed. I’m very glad I did it. Also, we were shooting at Bandon Dunes which is one of the most beautiful golf destinations in the world, never mind America. They have 4 incredible courses up there that are world class. So, I got to play a bit of golf as well, which was great. I loved that.”
