Jenny: Malcolm, I had a great time chatting with Tammy Hoffs (Director, Writer Producer Tamar Simon Hoffs), can you tell me some more about your latest project with her, Pound Of Flesh?
Malcolm: “I hear it’s looking terrific”…“I think it’s going to be an interesting movie. It’s certainly an intelligent film. [It’s] a true independent movie, which is what it should be. Something you won’t see in the mainstream. [And that’s] really the job of independent movies, to give people an alternative.”… “It’s got a good cast, including my daughter”… “It was nice to work with Lilly!”
Jenny: Tammy was telling me how watching the two of you work together was just amazing.
Malcolm: “Well it was fun to work with Lilly. Although, you know, after the initial thing of seeing her around, it’s like another actress. You don’t really think of it as your daughter.”
Jenny: Well, I think, right there, that shows her talent and professionalism. Another film you did with Tammy Hoffs is, of course, Red Roses and Petrol. The DVD and Soundtrack Album are coming out soon. When the DVD is released – if “Person X” is standing in a movie store and he or she comes across the Red Roses DVD, in your own words, why is this movie a good choice for everyone?
Malcolm: “It’s a very interesting family drama. [It’s about] a wonderful Irish family”…“The language is beautiful. It was one of those films that one had to do because it was so well written. It’s a lovely part for me, playing the patriarch of an Irish family.”… “[My character] dies very early on, and it’s basically the family coming together for the wake of the father…and secrets are revealed” …“[My character’s] left them a video recording, and there are flashbacks. I think it’s a beautiful film.”…“It’s an independent film again, and [as] always, independent films are interesting, because they’ve had to fight like crazy to get the thing made”…“It’s a very moving film, and it gives me a very nice role to do, something that I’m not often asked to do. [My character is] a wonderful Irish guy”…“It’s a very interesting a lovely sort of relationship kind of movie…and [the actors who play] my kids are wonderful in it, especially the boy playing my son, Max Beesley. He’s a very, very good actor. Everybody who was on it was terrific.”
Jenny: One movie of yours that I recently watched was, The Barber. I loved it! Did you enjoy working on that film?
Malcolm: “I enjoyed doing it immensely. It was shot up in Canada. [In the movie], it was supposed to be Alaska”... “It was all shot at night.”
Jenny: The film is clearly a “Thriller” – but it was also very funny. I really enjoyed that, and I know you tend to like that kind of style as well.
Malcolm: “I do. I always go for that if I can help it.”
Jenny: My last question is related to the Mick Travis “Trilogy” – If…., Oh Lucky Man!, and Britannia Hospital. In each of these films, you play a character named, Mick Travis. Now, clearly this character is very different in each of these films, the stories are very different, etc, but he always has the same name – Mick Travis. Do you, in any way, feel that the character in these three films is the same person, just placed in very different situations?
Malcolm: “No, not at all. The only thing in common, besides the fact that I’m playing the part, is that the name is the same” …“I think that is only there to confuse people. In If…, he’s a pure revolutionary, a sort of Che Guevara sort of figure for the boys of that school. Very much a loner, an outsider, one that sticks up for the underdog – and a pure rebel, in the best sense of the word. In Oh Lucky Man!, Mick Travis is an innocent, really. He’s an innocent on a journey through life….and that’s what’s absolutely beautiful about it. You’d think, by the very end, that he’d be cynical, but he’s not. Even when they put him in prison [falsely] he’s not cynical”…“I think Oh Lucky Man! is the densest, most complex film I ever made, and will likely ever be in. It’s an amazing film”… “You can watch it 100 times and still start seeing other things in it, and I think it was made by a master, Lindsay Anderson.”
Jenny: Well, it was both you and Lindsay who made it.
Malcolm: “Yes we did, but I’d have to say that the major influences on it were him. Even though it was my idea and all the rest of it, as I say in my tribute to him, it was to get his commitment to make another film.”
Jenny: If someone came to you and offered you a 4th Mick Travis movie to do now, would you consider it?
Malcolm: “Well, I’d consider it, but I don’t think I would do it, because, seriously, what can one say? The only reason for that movie was – it was the three of us, David Sherwin, and myself, and Lindsay. And Lindsay was the captain of the ship. I may have been the first mate, but, without him really, there’s no point. Of course everything I do and have done since I worked with Lindsay Anderson, in a way, has been a tribute to him”…“I learned so much from him that it’s always been reflected in the work that I’ve done ever since.”
