Below is a (Summary) of the MalcolmMcDowell.US Interview with Mike Kaplan.

Jenny: Mike, thank you for doing this interview for MalcolmMcDowell.US. You first worked with Lindsay Anderson on the release of Oh Lucky Man! In your own words, tell me about him. What was he like to work with, what was he like as a person?

Mike: Lindsay became a great friend. He had great intelligence, and was an extremely generous, supportive, fascinating and provocative human being.

Jenny: Tell me how Never Apologize evolved from the time that you became involved to the version we see on the DVD.

Mike: Never Apologize began as a stage piece at Edinburgh. It then went to the National Theatre in London, and then to the Ojai Film Festival. We only had two hours to prepare on stage before the first performance at Edinburgh.

Jenny: It was filmed at Ojai, correct?

Mike: [Yes,] it was filmed at the Ojai Film Festival. We had five cameras, only four worked. Originally, it was two and a half hours. It’s a little under two hours now [on the DVD].

Jenny: You also added an incredible collection of visuals to the DVD – visuals that were not in the stage performances, correct?

Mike: Yes, 200 visuals were added [to the DVD].

Jenny: I also especially loved the clever “vocabulary inserts,” if you will, that you placed into the DVD; for example, Lindsay’s definition of “Mini” v. “Epic.”

Mike: Well, it’s actually funny that you mention that, because I didn’t have an audience [camera angle] to cut to. I [also] never wanted to cut away [from Malcolm], because I wanted it to be as if it were a live performance. This made me become more creative when doing transitions and segues in the film. By total accident, similar transitions that you just described also appear in Lindsay Anderson’s Oh Lucky Man! and If....

Jenny: What was it like working with Malcolm?

Mike: Malcolm knew exactly what he was doing. [He’s] so talented and his presence is so compelling – and the material was excellent! It was a two and a half hour piece. We had a one-time only shot to get it on film, and we didn’t know how it would work. Art is sometimes a happy accident, and that’s really what this whole experience has been like. I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to make it work in an entertaining way. [Even] people who know nothing about the material have really enjoyed it.

Jenny: Where can Malcolm McDowell fans get the Never Apologize DVD?

Mike: The Never Apologize [Region 1] DVD will be on sale in the next couple of months. It’s available now for multi-regional [DVD] players.
